Fix: call `save` when hiding tab, and `update` when focusing it (#5114)
Fix for a regression in 0.28

* `App::save` will now be called when the web app is hidden (e.g. goes
to a background tab)
* `App::update` will now be called when the web app is un-hidden (e.g.
becomes the foreground tab)

Add `Context::request_discard` (#5059)
* Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4976
* Part of #4378
* Implements parts of #843

### Background
Some widgets (like `Grid` and `Table`) needs to know the width of future
elements in order to properly size themselves. For instance, the width
of the first column of a grid may not be known until all rows of the
grid has been added, at which point it is too late. Therefore these
widgets store sizes from the previous frame. This leads to "first-frame
jitter", were the content is placed in the wrong place for one frame,
before being accurately laid out in subsequent frames.

### What
This PR adds the function `ctx.request_discard` which discards the
visual output and does another _pass_, i.e. calls the whole app UI code
once again (in eframe this means calling `App::update` again). This will
thus discard the shapes produced by the wrongly placed widgets, and
replace it with new shapes. Note that only the visual output is
discarded - all other output events are accumulated.

Calling `ctx.request_discard` should only be done in very rare
circumstances, e.g. when a `Grid` is first shown. Calling it every frame
will mean the UI code will become unnecessarily slow.

Two safe-guards are in place:

* `Options::max_passes` is by default 2, meaning egui will never do more
than 2 passes even if `request_discard` is called on every pass
* If multiple passes is done for multiple frames in a row, a warning
will be printed on the screen in debug builds:

![image](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/c2c1e4a4-b7c9-4d7a-b3ad-abdd74bf449f)

### Breaking changes
A bunch of things that had "frame" in the name now has "pass" in them
instead:

* Functions called `begin_frame` and `end_frame` are now called
`begin_pass` and `end_pass`
* `FrameState` is now `PassState`
* etc

### TODO
* [x] Figure out good names for everything (`ctx.request_discard`)
* [x] Add API to query if we're gonna repeat this frame (to early-out
from expensive rendering)
* [x] Clear up naming confusion (pass vs frame) e.g. for `FrameState`
* [x] Figure out when to call this
* [x] Show warning on screen when there are several frames in a row with
multiple passes
* [x] Document
* [x] Default on or off?
* [x] Change `Context::frame_nr` name/docs
* [x] Rename `Context::begin_frame/end_frame` and deprecate the old ones
* [x] Test with Rerun
* [x] Document breaking changes

Make Light & Dark Visuals Customizable When Following The System Theme (#4744)
* Closes <https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4490>
* [x] I have followed the instructions in the PR template

---

Unfortunately, this PR contains a bunch of breaking changes because
`Context` no longer has one style, but two. I could try to add some of
the methods back if that's desired.

The most subtle change is probably that `style_mut` mutates both the
dark and the light style (which from the usage in egui itself felt like
the right choice but might be surprising to users).

I decided to deviate a bit from the data structure suggested in the
linked issue.
Instead of this:
```rust
pub theme: Theme, // Dark or Light
pub follow_system_theme: bool, // Change [`Self::theme`] based on `RawInput::system_theme`?
```

I decided to add a `ThemePreference` enum and track the current system
theme separately.
This has a couple of benefits:
* The user's theme choice is not magically overwritten on the next
frame.
* A widget for changing the theme preference only needs to know the
`ThemePreference` and not two values.
* Persisting the `theme_preference` is fine (as opposed to persisting
the `theme` field which may actually be the system theme).

The `small_toggle_button` currently only toggles between dark and light
(so you can never get back to following the system). I think it's easy
to improve on this in a follow-up PR :)
I made the function `pub(crate)` for now because it should eventually be
a method on `ThemePreference`, not `Theme`.

To showcase the new capabilities I added a new example that uses
different "accent" colors in dark and light mode:

The syntax highlighting font size was always hardcoded to 12 or 10
depending on what case it was hitting (so not consistent). This is
particularly noticeable when you increase the font size to something
larger for the rest of the ui.

With this the default monospace font size is used by default.

Since the issue is closely related to #3549 I decided to implement the
ability to use override_font_id too.

## Visualized

Default monospace is set to 15 in all the pictures

                _ => 1.0,
            };

            let scale = ui
                .ctx()
                .animate_value_with_time(ui.id().with("Down"), target_scale, 0.1);

            let mut center = response
                .as_ref()
                .map(|r| r.rect.center())
                .unwrap_or_else(|| Pos2::new(0.0, 0.0));
            if center.any_nan() {
                center = Pos2::new(0.0, 0.0);

Export module `egui::frame` (#5087)
Remove the crate visibility of the frame module. Useful at least when
using `Frame::begin` as otherwise the returned type is opaque to library
users and prevents from creating containers that use `Frame` with a
similar interface.

Alternative is to only export `frame::Prepared` as `PreparedFrame` or
something, but I saw that other submodules of containers are already
public.

Conditionally propagate web events using a filter in WebOptions (#5056)
Currently egui will prevent all web events from propagating. This causes
issues in contexts where you are using egui in a larger web context that
wants to receive events that egui does not directly respond to. For
example, currently using egui in a VSCode extension will block all app
hotkeys, such as saving and opening the panel.

This adds a closure to `WebOptions` that takes in a reference to the
egui event that is generated from a web event and returns if the
corresponding web event should be propagated or not. The default for it
is to always return false.

Alternatives I considered were:
1. Having the propagation filter be a property of the focus in memory.
That way it could be configured by the view currently selected. I opted
away from that because I wanted to avoid lowering eframe implementation
specific stuff into egui.
2. Having events contain a `web_propagate` flag that could be set when
handling them. However, that would not be compatible with the current
system of egui events being handled outside of the web event handler.

I just recently started using egui so I am not sure how idiomatic my
approach here is. I would be happy to switch this over to a different
architecture if there are suggestions.

Allow non-`static` `eframe::App` lifetime (#5060)
I love egui! Thank you Emil <3

This request specifically enables an `eframe::App` which stores a
lifetime.

In general, I believe this is necessary because `eframe::App` currently
does not seem to provide a good place to allocate and then borrow from
long-lived data between `update()` calls. To attempt to borrow such
long-lived data from a field of the `App` itself would be to create a
self-referential struct. A hacky alternative is to allocate long-lived
data with `Box::leak`, but that's a code smell and would cause problems
if a program ever creates multiple Apps.

As a more specific motivating example, I am developing with the
[inkwell](https://github.com/TheDan64/inkwell/) crate which requires
creating a `inkwell::context::Context` instance which is then borrowed
from by a bazillion things with a dedicated `'ctx` lifetime. I need such
a `inkwell::context::Context` for the duration of my `eframe::App` but I
can't store it as a field of the app. The most natural solution to me is
to simply to lift the inkwell context outside of the App and borrow from
it, but that currently fails because the AppCreator implicitly has a
`'static` lifetime requirement due to the use of `dyn` trait objects.

Here is a simpler, self-contained motivating example adapted from the
current [hello world example](https://docs.rs/eframe/latest/eframe/):

```rust
use eframe::egui;
struct LongLivedThing {
    message: String,
}
fn main() {
    let long_lived_thing = LongLivedThing {
        message: "Hello World!".to_string(),
    };
    let native_options = eframe::NativeOptions::default();
    eframe::run_native(
        "My egui App",
        native_options,
        Box::new(|cc| Ok(Box::new(MyEguiApp::new(cc, &long_lived_thing)))),
        //                                           ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
        //                                           BORROWING from long_lived_thing in App
    );
}
struct MyEguiApp<'a> {
    long_lived_thing: &'a LongLivedThing,
}
impl<'a> MyEguiApp<'a> {
    fn new(cc: &eframe::CreationContext<'_>, long_lived_thing: &'a LongLivedThing) -> Self {
        // Customize egui here with cc.egui_ctx.set_fonts and cc.egui_ctx.set_visuals.
        // Restore app state using cc.storage (requires the "persistence" feature).
        // Use the cc.gl (a glow::Context) to create graphics shaders and buffers that you can use
        // for e.g. egui::PaintCallback.
        MyEguiApp { long_lived_thing }
    }
}
impl<'a> eframe::App for MyEguiApp<'a> {
    fn update(&mut self, ctx: &egui::Context, frame: &mut eframe::Frame) {
        egui::CentralPanel::default().show(ctx, |ui| {
            ui.heading(&self.long_lived_thing.message);
        });
    }
}
```

This currently fails to compile with:

* Closes <https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4776>
* [x] I have followed the instructions in the PR template

I've been meaning to look into this for a while but finally bit the
bullet this week. Contrary to what I initially thought, the problem of
blurry lines is unrelated to feathering because it also happens with
feathering disabled.

The root cause is that lines tend to land on pixel boundaries, and
because of that, frequently used strokes (e.g. 1pt), end up partially
covering pixels. This is especially noticeable on 1ppp displays.

There were a couple of things to fix, namely: individual lines like
separators and indents but also shape strokes (e.g. Frame).

Lines were easy, I just made sure we round them to the nearest pixel
_center_, instead of the nearest pixel boundary.

Strokes were a little more complicated. To illustrate why, here’s an
example: if we're rendering a 5x5 rect (black fill, red stroke), we
would expect to see something like this:

![Screenshot 2024-08-11 at 15 01
41](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/5a5d4434-0814-451b-8179-2864dc73c6a6)

The fill and the stroke to cover entire pixels. Instead, egui was
painting the stroke partially inside and partially outside, centered
around the shape’s path (blue line):

![Screenshot 2024-08-11 at 15 00
57](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/4284dc91-5b6e-4422-994a-17d527a6f13b)

Both methods are valid for different use-cases but the first one is what
we’d typically want for UIs to feel crisp and pixel perfect. It's also
how CSS borders work (related to #4019 and #3284).

Luckily, we can use the normal computed for each `PathPoint` to adjust
the location of the stroke to be outside, inside, or in the middle.
These also are the 3 types of strokes available in tools like Photoshop.

This PR introduces an enum `StrokeKind` which determines if a
`PathStroke` should be tessellated outside, inside, or _on_ the path
itself. Where "outside" is defined by the directions normals point to.

Tessellator will now use `StrokeKind::Outside` for closed shapes like
rect, ellipse, etc. And `StrokeKind::Middle` for the rest since there's
no meaningful "outside" concept for open paths. This PR doesn't expose
`StrokeKind` to user-land, but we can implement that later so that users
can render shapes and decide where to place the stroke.

### Strokes test
(blue lines represent the size of the rect being rendered)

`Stroke::Middle` (current behavior, 1px and 3px are blurry)

### Demo App
The best way to review this PR is to run the demo on a 1ppp display,
especially to test hover effects. Everything should look crisper. Also
run it in a higher dpi screen to test that nothing broke 🙏.

Nicer looking text selection, especially in light mode (#5017)
* Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4727

This changes the text selection painting from being painted on top of

background. The result is much nicer looking text selection, especially
in light mode:

Prevent `ScrollArea` contents from exceeding the container size (#5006)
When a `ScrollArea` is added to a `Ui` or its contents change
dynamically, the contents will briefly escape the container. This occurs
because `ScrollArea` internally maintains `content_is_too_large` flags,
from which it determines when to clip. The `content_is_too_large` flags
are calculated after painting, so they always lag one frame behind. This
can lead to flickering.

To fix this, I have changed the `ScrollArea` so that it always clips
scrollable content. I believe that this should fix things without
negatively impacting other behavior. To see this, consider how
`ScrollArea` calculates the `content_is_too_large` flag:

```rust
// This calculates a new inner rect, after painting, from the initial clip rect
let inner_rect = {
  // At this point this is the available size for the inner rect.
  let mut inner_size = inner_rect.size();
  for d in 0..2 {
      inner_size[d] = match (scroll_enabled[d], auto_shrink[d]) {
          (true, true) => inner_size[d].min(content_size[d]), // shrink scroll area if content is small
          (true, false) => inner_size[d], // let scroll area be larger than content; fill with blank space
          (false, true) => content_size[d], // Follow the content (expand/contract to fit it).
          (false, false) => inner_size[d].max(content_size[d]), // Expand to fit content
      };
  }
  Rect::from_min_size(inner_rect.min, inner_size)
};
let outer_rect = Rect::from_min_size(inner_rect.min, inner_rect.size() + current_bar_use);
let content_is_too_large = Vec2b::new(
  scroll_enabled[0] && inner_rect.width() < content_size.x,
  scroll_enabled[1] && inner_rect.height() < content_size.y,
);
```
If `scroll_enabled[d] == true`, then the actual `inner_rect` (which is
calculated after painting contents) will always be smaller than the
original `inner_rect`. Hence, it is safe to unconditionally clip the
contents to `inner_rect` whenever `scroll_enabled[d] == true`.

This PR
- adds a pipeline to check the ios build
- removes the iOS WaitUntil workaround, which doesn't seem to be
necessary anymore after the winit update (and caused the build for iOS
to fail again because of a missing self
- ~removes a iOS workaround for window size which doesn't seem necessary
anymore~
Turns out it was still needed (but you need to actually restart the app
for the issue to show up, so I didn't catch it first)
- fixes some cargo check errors in run.rs

I've done all these changes in a single PR because otherwise the
pipeline doesn't run but I can also split them in separate PRs if that
makes it easier to review

Fix crash when changing viewport settings (#4862)
* Fixes #3959

There are two bugs racing each other here, which is why it sometimes
crashes and sometimes the app just silently exists

Bug 1
When the window is recreated a Destroyed event arrives (due to the Drop
of the old window). The code that receives this event does not look to
see if its the main viewport or a secondary one and unconditionally
closes the app. The code path for other platforms is slightly different
and does check.

I have moved the code that handles the destroy to be in the same place
and have the same behavior as the other platforms.

Bug 2

At recreate time the window and winit entries of the viewport are set to
None (forcin g them to be recreated). But the surface is still bound to
the old window, this causes the next context switch to fail. So I simply
added a viewport.gl_surface = None too,

This is my first egui PR so I hope I have not broken anything. If
nothing else I understand a little better how egui works.

Unpin & upgrade winit to 0.30.5 (#4939)
This updates winit to 0.30.5.

https://github.com/emilk/egui/pull/4849 Had to pin the version to
0.30.2, as a Winit patch changed the behavior of selecting a theme.
Winit 0.30.5 reverts this, so we could stick with `window.theme()`, but
the newly added `ActiveEventLoop::system_theme` is more like what egui
wants anyway, as individual windows can have theme overrides.

Also bump `smithay-clipboard` to prevent some now duplicate
dependencies.

Update `Button` to correctly align contained image (#4891)
Similar to #4889

Updated the `ui` method of the `Button` widget so that the alignment
given by the layout is applied to the image contained in the button (if
one exists).

Currently, only the text inside the button has alignment applied to it,
and only when it is not accompanied by an image or shortcut text. Images
within buttons are always aligned to the centre left, no matter the
alignment of the containing `Ui`. This update now also applies this
alignment to an image when it has no accompanying text, which makes
buttons with an image and no text more consistent with the appearance of
ones with text and no image.

I've also made an additional change so that the vertical alignment is
now also respected when displaying some combination of image and text,
but the original horizontal alignment remains the same, so that the
image always appears left of the text. Any shortcut text now also
follows vertical alignment, but is always horizontally aligned to the
right.

Here are some comparisons of the difference between how buttons look
with different alignments, before and after this change:

Upgrade winit to 0.30.2 (#4849)

* Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4437
* Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4709

Hiya,

I need new winit for a specific fix for a android_native_actvity. There
are already two PRs, but both don't seem to have a lot of movement, or
are entirely complete:

https://github.com/emilk/egui/pull/4466
Seems to have gone stale & is missing some bits.

https://github.com/emilk/egui/pull/4702
Also seems stale (if less so), and is missing a refactor to
run_on_demand. I also *think* the accesskit integration has a mistake
and can't be enabled. I've marked them as a co-author on this as I
started from this branch. (I think! Haven't done that on git before...).

Sorry for the wall of text but just dumping some details / thoughts
here:

- There's an issue with creating child windows in winit 0.30.1 and up on
macOS. The multiple_viewports, "create immediate viewport" example
crashes on anything later 0.30.1, with a stack overflow in unsafe code.
I've create [a winit
issue](https://github.com/rust-windowing/winit/issues/3800), it *might*
already be fixed in 0.31.0 but I can't test as 0.31 will likely require
another refactoring. For now I have just pinned things to 0.30.0 exatly.

- Winit has deprecated run_on_demand, instead requiring the
ApplicationHandler interface. In 0.31.0 run_on_demand is removed. I've
refactored both the integration and the WinitApp trait to follow this
pattern. I've left user_events a bit more opaque, as it seems 0.31.0 is
doing a rework of UserEvents too.

- I've used the new lazy init approach for access kit from this branch
https://github.com/mwcampbell/egui/tree/accesskit-new-lazy-init and
marked Matt as co-author, thanks Matt!

- There was very similair but not quite the same code for run_and_return
and run_and_exit. I've merged them, but looking at the github issues
graveyard it seems vey finnicky. I *hope* this is more robust than
before but it's a bit scary.

- when receiving new_events this also used to check the redraw timing
dictionary. That doesn't seem necesarry so left this out, but that is a
slight behaviour change?

- I have reeneabled serial_windows on macOS. I wondered whether it was
fixed after this PR and does seem to be! However, even before this PR it
seems to work, so maybe winit has sorted things out before that...
Windows also works fine now without the extra hack.

- I've done a very basic test of AccessKit on Windows and screen reader
seems ok but I'm really not knowleadgable enough to say whether it's all
good or not.

- I've tested cargo tests & all examples on Windows & macOS, and ran a
basic Android app. Still, testing native platforms is wel... hard so if
anyone can test linux / iOs / older mac versions / windows 10 would
probably be a good idea!

- For consistencys sake I've made all event like functions in WinitApp
return a `Result<EventResult>`. There's quite a bit of Ok-wrapping now,
maybe too annoying? Not sure.

Thank you for having a look!

Fix: hint text follows the alignment set on the `TextEdit` (#4889)
Updated the `show_content` method of the `TextEdit` widget so that the
requested text alignment (if any) is also applied to the hint text.

Currently, hint text is always aligned to the top left of the widget,
which may be inconsistent with the actual location of text entered by
the user. I think it's more intuitive for the hint text to be positioned
as if the user had entered the same text themselves.

Here are some comparisons of the difference between how the hint text
and the entered text looks, before and after this change:

I find myself wanting this API quite a lot, and I imagine it'll probably
be useful for others.

# What?

This PR adds `Rect::scale` and `Rect::scale2` functions, which work a
lot like `expand`, but instead multiply by a scale.

i.e.
```rs
rect.scale(2.0); // rect is 2x as big, still in same center
rect.scale2(vec2(1.5, 2.0)); // rect is 1.5x as big on x axis, 2.0x as big on y axis. still in same center
```

# Why?

Before this you either had to write this yourself or use a `expand` in a
cumbersome way:
```rs
rect.expand2(vec2(rect.width() * scale.x / 2.0, rect.height() * scale.y / 2.0));
```

I find myself wanting to scale things up by a factor frequently enough,
and it seems like a useful addition to have a multiply-based variant of
`expand`.

I realise this is pretty minor, but it seems useful enough to me!

Add `Ui::columns_const()` (#4764)
# Changes

- Adds a new function `egui::Ui::columns_const()`, which is the same as
`egui::Ui::columns()` except that it uses a `const` parameter for the
column count.
- Backed by an array `[Ui; NUM_COL] instead of a `Vec<Ui>`, so fewer

- Inner closure takes in an array reference, instead of a slice
reference. This makes it possible to use pattern destructuring on the
columns, as shown in the example, and makes it more ergonomic to use

# Example

```rust
// ORIGINAL
ui.columns(2, |cols| {
    cols[0].label("one");
    cols[1].label("two");
});
// NEW
ui.columns_const(|[a,b]| {
    a.label("one");
    b.label("two");
});
```

Add undo/redo demo. (#4811)
* Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/1713

I almost went to implement my own undo/redo system, and then found the
egui undoer.
Went to make a small demo to test for myself how it worked, and then
found the linked issue.
So here is a tweaked version of that :)

Change default `max_scroll_height` of `egui::Table` to `f32::INFINITY` (#4817)
`egui::Table` has a weirdly specific default `max_scroll_height` set to
800.0. This means that even with `vscroll(true)` and `auto_shrink([_,
false])`, the table will not expend to the full available height. This
PR changes this value to `f32::INFINITY`. This makes it consistent with
the corresponding default value of `ScrollArea::max_size.y`, which is
where that `max_scroll_height` ends up being used.

Introduce dithering to reduce banding (#4497)
This PR introduces dithering in the egui_glow and egui_wgpu backends to
reduce banding artifacts.

It's based on the approach mentioned in #4493 with the small difference
that the amount of noise is scaled down slightly to avoid dithering
colors that can be represented exactly. This keeps flat surfaces clean.

Exaggerated dithering to show what is happening:

eframe web: ignore keyboard events unless canvas has focus (#4718)
* Fixes https://github.com/rerun-io/rerun/issues/6638
* Related? https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4563

This improves how an eframe canvas works inside of a larger web page,
and how it works when there are multiple eframe apps in the same page.

`eframe` will set `tabindex="0"` on the canvas automatically, making it
focusable.
It will also set `outline: none` on the CSS, so the focused canvas won't
have an ugly outline.

## Breaking changes
You may wanna add this to your `index.html` to give the canvas focus on
startup:
```js
document.getElementById("the_canvas_id").focus();
```

## Test setup
```sh
./scripts/build_demo_web.sh
./scripts/start_server.sh
open http://localhost:8888/multiple_apps.html
```
Then open the "Input Event History" and "Text Edit" windows

Add basic test for egui accesskit output. (#4716)
For a project I am currently attempting to use the acceskit output of
egui to preform end-to-end integration tests of my application. However,
the output is currently quite basic (buttons for example don't report
that they are disabled).

Before adding new features to the acceskit integration, I thought it
would be a good idea to add some testing to egui's accesskit output.
I have started with a simple test for button texts, to get feedback on
whether this is the correct direction to go in.

Add `PopupCloseBehavior` (#4636)
This PR adds `PopupCloseBehavior` to improve state of the
<https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4607>

`PopupCloseBehavior` determines when popup will be closed.
- `CloseOnClick` popup will be closed if the click happens anywhere even

- `CloseOnClickAway` popup will be closed if the click happens somewhere

It also adds a test in the demo app which contains several popups

---

My ideas about <https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4607> is to make
every tooltip and popup a menu. So it will provide more control over
popups and tooltips (you will be able to close a popup by calling
something similar to the `ui.close_menu` if you need to). You won't need
to manually handle it's opening. And also will allow to have multiple
popups opened. That means you can have a popup inside a popup. And it
will also lead to the easier creation of the popups. (should we create a
tracking issue to track changes because to me it seems like a huge
amount of changes to be done?)

Fix: Menu popups and tooltips don't respect layer transforms (#4708)
The menu buttons, combo box menus, and tooltips don't take layer
transforms into account when placing their popups, resulting in popups
being placed in the wrong location.

This PR makes the popups take layer transforms into account,
transforming the positions before displaying them on screen. I
implemented this fix for menu buttons, combo boxes, and tooltips; let me
know if there's anything I missed.
Scaling of the popups is purposefully ignored for now. Personally, I
think popup scaling isn't necessary but if it is required I can
implement it (also it would require doing more invasive things to the
code and I want to keep this as simple as possible.)

Before the fix: (with a modified version of the "Pan Zoom" web demo)
<video
src=https://github.com/emilk/egui/assets/104604363/a2d79757-c410-4815-8159-b64d6bd668ee>

src=https://github.com/emilk/egui/assets/104604363/48f8b1d1-d30f-44bf-961f-f10b85964a92>

The frame delay seems to be unavoidable unless we can move the popups
_after_ the layer transform is set (or apply the transforms to the popup
during painting). I think this would be better implemented once the
menu/popup/tooltip unification is done (#4669).

Improve backtraces when hovering widgets with modifiers pressed (#4696)
A useful debug-feature in egui is pressing down all modifiers keys and
hovering any widget to see its backtrace (only in `dev` builds).
Unfortunately this is incompatible with `panic="abort"`, something I
just now discovered.

So I removed `panic="abort"` from `Cargo.toml` for `dev` builds. If the
backtrace returns empty-handed, I also suggests this as a fix to the
user. Finally, I cleaned up the backtraces a bit, making them slightly
shorter and more readable.

doc(emath): Add `top_left` as an alias for `left_top`, etc. (#4689)
# What

Adds `#[doc(alias = "top_left")]` as an alias for `left_top`, and so on
for `right_top`, `right_bottom`, `left_bottom`.

# Why

Extremely minor doc-only change, but I keep going to type "top left" to
look for the top left of a rectangle.
I'm unsure whether this is just a british-english thing or an
english-in-general thing, but `top left corner` is far more common than
`left top corner`.
These doc aliases don't conflict with anything, and mean that
rust-analyzer will suggest the correct function when I search for the
wrong thing.

This improves ergonomics and discoverability in my opinion, even if not
by much.

When layer transforms are present, the `Response::hover_pos` function in
egui returns `transform * pos` instead of `transform.inverse() * pos`.
This is incorrect and isn't consistent with [how egui calculates other
interaction
positions](https://github.com/emilk/egui/blob/master/crates/egui/src/context.rs#L1193).

See:
https://github.com/emilk/egui/blob/master/crates/egui/src/response.rs#L471

This PR fixes this bug, changing `transform` to `transform.inverse()`.
Nothing fancy here, just a one-line change. `scripts/check.sh` runs
successfully.

Below are videos of before and after with a modified version of the web
demo. I added another entry after
https://github.com/emilk/egui/blob/master/crates/egui_demo_lib/src/demo/pan_zoom.rs#L108
with a debug rectangle drawn at the return value of `hover_pos`:
```rust
(
    egui::Pos2::new(120.0, 120.0),
    Box::new(|ui, _state| {
        let response =
            ui.allocate_response(egui::Vec2::splat(128.0), egui::Sense::hover());
        ui.painter().rect_filled(
            egui::Rect::from_center_size(
                response.hover_pos().unwrap_or_default(),
                egui::Vec2::splat(8.0),
            ),
            egui::Rounding::ZERO,
            egui::Color32::DEBUG_COLOR,
        );
        response
    }),
),
```

Fix buggy interaction with widgets outside of clip rect (#4675)
This fixes a bug which sometimes would make it possible to interact with
widgets that were outside the parent clip_rect.

Interaction with a widget is done with the `interact_rect`, which is the
intersection of the widget rect and the parent clip rect. If these
rectangles are disjoint (the widget is outside the parent clip rect),
this results in a _negative rectangle_ (a rectangle with a negative
width and/or height). The distance tests for negative rectangles were
broken, causing the bug.

* This is part of solving https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4475
* It is also likely this would have solved
https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4349 (which now has another fix for
it)

### Breaking changes
`Rect::distance_to_pos`, `distance_sq_to_pos`, `signed_distance_to_pos`

All the other crates in egui have serde as an optional dependency -
which is great! But sadly egui_extras unconditionally includes it, which
adds a bunch of code to stuff that may not care for it. This PR gates
serde support behind a new `serde` feature.

This is a breaking change; if that's undesirable then we can add it as a
default feature instead, though that wouldn't match any of the other
crates.

Replace `directories-next` dependency with `directories` (#4661)
`directories-next` was created because `directories` was not maintained
at the time. However, `directories` has gotten active maintainership
since, and it has received more updates than `directories-next`.

`directories` also has more recent downloads than its `next`
counterpart, so it might make sense to switch to it, to avoid
unnecessary duplicate dependencies, where a project depends transitively
on both `directories` and `directories-next`.

The main question is whether we depend on any specific behavior from
`directories-next`.

Improve behavior of plot auto-bounds with reduced data (#4632)

* Fixes #2307

This PR improves the behaviour of auto-bounds with data that:
- is a single point
- where all X values are the same (e.g. vertical line)
- where all Y values are the same (e.g. horizontal line)

In all case, the auto-bound now aim to center on the data. For span,
when available, it use the same as the other axis. If the data range of
the other axis is also degenerate, then it defaults to +/- 1.0.

Easing functions (#4630)
This adds most of the "standard" easing functions from
https://easings.net/ to `emath::easing`, and adds helpers in `egui` for
using them.

In particular there is now `ctx.animate_bool_with_easing` and
`ctx.animate_bool_responsive`, that uses a cubic easing function.

All animations in egui now uses cubic ease-out, for a more responsive
feeling (fast at the start, slower towards the end).

Introduce `UiStack` (#4588)
* Closes #4534

This PR:
- Introduces `Ui::stack()`, which returns the `UiStack` structure
providing information on the current `Ui` hierarchy.
- **BREAKING**: `Ui::new()` now takes a `UiStackInfo` argument, which is
used to populate some of this `Ui`'s `UiStack`'s fields.
- **BREAKING**: `Ui::child_ui()` and `Ui::child_ui_with_id_source()` now
take an `Option<UiStackInfo>` argument, which is used to populate some
of the children `Ui`'s `UiStack`'s fields.
- New `Area::kind()` builder function, to set the `UiStackKind` value of
the `Area`'s `Ui`.
- Adds a (minimalistic) demo to egui demo (in the "Misc Demos" window).
- Adds a more thorough `test_ui_stack` test/playground demo.

TODO:
- [x] benchmarks
- [x] add example to demo

Future work:
- Add `UiStackKind` and related support for more container (e.g.
`CollapsingHeader`, etc.)
- Add a tag/property system that would allow adding arbitrary data to a
stack node. This data could then be queried by nested `Ui`s. Probably
needed for #3284.
- Add support to track columnar layouts.

Support interactive widgets in tooltips (#4596)
* Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/1010

### In short
You can now put interactive widgets, like buttons and hyperlinks, in an
tooltip using `on_hover_ui`. If you do, the tooltip will stay open as
long as the user hovers it.

There is a new demo for this in the egui demo app (egui.rs):

![interactive-tooltips](https://github.com/emilk/egui/assets/1148717/97335ba6-fa3e-40dd-9da0-1276a051dbf2)

### Design
Tooltips can now contain interactive widgets, such as buttons and links.
If they do, they will stay open when the user moves their pointer over
them.

Widgets that do not contain interactive widgets disappear as soon as you
no longer hover the underlying widget, just like before. This is so that
they won't annoy the user.

To ensure not all tooltips with text in them are considered interactive,
`selectable_labels` is `false` for tooltips contents by default. If you
want selectable text in tooltips, either change the `selectable_labels`
setting, or use `Label::selectable`.

```rs
ui.label("Hover me").on_hover_ui(|ui| {
    ui.style_mut().interaction.selectable_labels = true;
    ui.label("This text can be selected.");
    ui.add(egui::Label::new("This too.").selectable(true));
});
```

Make `egu::menu` types public (#4544)
Sometimes we need to fix the current state of the application in the
moment when you open the context menu, to save it, and to use it during
creation of context menu and response handling. Making some structs,
related with menu creating, allow us to create functions for this cases.
For example,
```rust
pub fn context_menu_custom<'a, T>(
    response: &Response,
    //variable for fixing state in the moment when you open context menu
    state: &mut T,
    //function which allow to get some king of state.
    //In this case state depends on cursor position, in other cases it may depend on system time or something else
    get_state: impl FnOnce(Pos2) -> T,
    //set contents of menu depending on state
    set_contents: impl 'a + FnOnce(&T) -> Box<dyn 'a + FnOnce(&mut Ui)>,
) -> Option<InnerResponse<()>> {
    let menu_id = Id::new("__egui::context_menu");
    let mut bar_state = BarState::load(&response.ctx, menu_id);
    let root = &mut bar_state;
    let menu_response = MenuRoot::context_interaction(response, root);
    if let egui::menu::MenuResponse::Create(p, _) = &menu_response {
        *state = get_state(*p);
    };
    let add_contents = set_contents(&state);
    MenuRoot::handle_menu_response(root, menu_response);
    let inner_response = bar_state.show(response, add_contents);
    bar_state.store(&response.ctx, menu_id);
    inner_response
}
```
The example of using such function you may see in [`my
repository`](https://github.com/sor-ca/context_menu)
It is very simple example, and is this case, the problem may be solved
without fn context_menu_custom, but in more complex situations, it may
be very useful

Round text galley sizes to nearest ui point size (#4578)
Previously, many labels had non-integer widths. This lead to rounding
errors.

This was most notable for the new `Area` sizing code:

We would run the initial sizing pass, to measure the size of e.g. a
tooltip.
Say the tooltip contains text that was 100.123 ui points wide. With a
16pt border, that becomes 116.123, which is stored in the `Area` state
as the width. The next frame, we use that stored size as the wrapping
width. With perfect precision, we would then tell the label to wrap to
100.123 pts, which the text would _just_ fit in. However, due to
rounding errors we might end up asking it to wrap to 100.12**2** pts,
meaning the last word would now wrap and end up on the next line.

By rounding label sizes to perfect integers, we avoid such rounding
errors, and most ui elements will now end up on perfect integer point
coordinates (and `f32` can precisely express and do arithmetic on all
integers < 2^24).

Visually this has very little impact. Some labels move by a pixel here
and there, mostly for the better.

If you change your code for what is contained in a menu, tooltips,

Improve web text agent (#4561)
- Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4060 - no longer aligned
to top
- Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4479 - `canvas.style` is
not set anywhere anymore
- Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/2231 - same as #4060
- Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/3618 - there is now one
`<input>` per `eframe` app, and it's removed transitively by
`WebRunner::destroy -> AppRunner::drop -> TextAgent::drop`

This PR improves the text agent to make fewer assumptions about how
`egui` is embedded into the page:
- Text agent no longer sets the canvas position
- There is now a text agent for each instance of `WebRunner`
- The input element is now moved to the correct position, so the OS can
display the IME window in the correct place. Before it would typically
be outside of the viewport

The best way to test this is to build & server the web demo locally:
```
scripts/build_demo_web.sh && scripts/start_server.sh
```

Then open the EasyMark editor, and try using IME to input some emojis:
http://localhost:8888/#EasyMarkEditor

To open the emoji keyboard use:
- <kbd>win + .</kbd> on Windows
- <kbd>ctrl + cmd + space</kbd> on Mac

Tested on:
- [x] Windows
- [x] Linux
- [x] MacOS
- [x] Android
- [x] iOS

## Migration guide

The canvas no longer controls its own size/position on the page. This
means that those properties can now be controlled entirely via HTML and
CSS, and multiple separate `eframe` apps can coexist better on a single
page.

To match the old behavior, set the `canvas` width and height to 100% of
the `body` element:

```html
<html>
  <body>
    <canvas></canvas>
  </body>
</html>
```

```css
/* remove default margins and use full viewport */
html, body {
  margin: 0;
  width: 100%;
  height: 100%;
}
canvas {
  /* match parent element size */
  width: 100%;
  height: 100%;
}
```

Note that there is no need to set `position: absolute`/`left: 50%;
transform: translateX(-50%)`/etc., and setting those properties may
poorly affect the sharpness of `egui`-rendered text.

Because `eframe` no longer updates the canvas style in any way, it also
means that on mobile, the canvas no longer collapses upwards to make
space for a mobile keyboard. This should be solved in other ways:

`ComboBox`: fix justified layout of popup if wider than parent button (#4570)
* Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4452

The `ComboBox` popup has a justified layout to make selection of items

Thanks to [the new sizing pass
logic](https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4535) we don't have to know
the final width in advance:

Add `Ui::is_sizing_pass` for better size estimation of `Area`s, and menus in particular (#4557)
* Part of https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/4535
* Closes https://github.com/emilk/egui/issues/3974

This adds a special `sizing_pass` mode to `Ui`, in which we have no
centered or justified layouts, and everything is hidden. This is used by
`Area` to use the first frame to measure the size of its contents so
that it can then set the perfectly correct size the subsequent frames.

For menus, where buttons are justified (span the full width), this
finally the problem of auto-sizing. Before you would have to pick a
width manually, and all buttons would expand to that width. If it was
too wide, it looked weird. If it was too narrow, text would wrap. Now
all menus are exactly the width they need to be. By default menus will
wrap at `Spacing::menu_width`.

This affects all situations when you have something that should be as
small as possible, but still span the full width/height of the parent.
For instance: the `egui::Separator` widget now checks the
`ui.is_sizing_pass` flag before deciding on a size. In the sizing pass a
horizontal separator is always 0 wide, and only in subsequent passes
will it span the full width.

0.20 has a bunch of bugs that will be fixed by:

At Rerun, we don't want to wait for the wgpu 0.20.1 patch release before

After reverting I'll open a new PR that will update to 0.20 again, with

Add support for text truncation to `egui::Style` (#4556)
* Closes #4473

This PR introduce `Style::wrap_mode`, which adds support for text
truncation in addition to text wrapping. This PR also update some width
calculation of the ComboBox.

#### Core

- Add `egui::TextWrapMode` (pure enum with `Extend`, `Wrap`, `Truncate`)
- Add `Style::wrap_mode: Option<tTextWrapMode>`
- **DEPRECATED**: `Style::wrap`, use `Style::wrap_mode` instead.
- Add `Ui::wrap_mode()` to return the wrap mode to use in the current
ui. If specified in `Style`, return it. Otherwise, return
`TextWrapMode::Wrap` for vertical layout and wrapping horizontal layout,
and `TextWrapMode::Extend` otherwise.
- **DEPRECATED**: `Ui::wrap_text()`, use `Ui::wrap_mode` instead.

#### Widget

- Update the width calculation of the `ComboBox` button (_not_ its popup
menu).
- Now, `ComboBox::width()` (defaulting to `Spacing::combo_width`) is
always considered a minimum width and will extend the `Ui`, regardless
of the selected text width and wrap mode.
- Introduce `ComboBox::wrap_mode`, which overrides `Ui::wrap_mode` for
the selected text layout.
- Note: since `ComboBox` uses `ui.horizontal` internally, the default
wrap mode is always `TextWrapMode::Extend`, regardless of the caller's
`Ui`'s layout.
- The `ComboBox` button no longer extend to `ui.available_width()` with
wrapping is enabled.
- **BREAKING**: `ComboBox::wrap()` no longer has a `bool` argument and
is now a short-hand for `ComboBox::wrap_mode(TextWrapMode::Wrap)`.
- Added `ComboBox::truncate()` as short-hand for
`ComboBox::wrap_mode(TextWrapMode::Truncate)`.
- Update `Label`
  - Add `Label::wrap_mode()` to specify the text wrap mode.
- **BREAKING**: `Label::wrap()` no longer has a `bool` argument and is
now a short-hand for `Label::wrap_mode(TextWrapMode::Wrap)`.
- **BREAKING**: `Label::truncate()` no longer has a `bool` argument and
is now a short-hand for `Label::wrap_mode(TextWrapMode::Truncate)`.
- Update `Button`
  - Add `Button::wrap_mode()` to specify the text wrap mode.
- **BREAKING**: `Button::wrap()` no longer has a `bool` argument and is
now a short-hand for `Button::wrap_mode(TextWrapMode::Wrap)`.
- Added `Button::truncate()` as short-hand for
`Button::wrap_mode(TextWrapMode::Truncate)`.

#### Low-level

- **BREAKING**: `WidgetText::into_galley()` now takes an
`Option<TextWrapMode>` instead of a `Option<bool>` argument.
- **BREAKING**: `WidgetText::into_galley_impl(()` now takes a
`TextWrapping` argument instead of `wrap: bool` and `availalbe_width:
f32` arguments.

This introduces the boolean field force_current_scroll_area to
InputState which will be set when scroll_with_delta is called, causing
the ScrollArea to skip the check whether it is focused and always
consume the smooth scroll delta.

Add `Options::reduce_texture_memory` to free up RAM (#4431)
## Summary

This PR introduces a new configuration option `reduce_texture_memory` in
`egui`.

## Changes

- Added `reduce_texture_memory` option in `egui`. When set to `true`,
`egui` will discard the loaded image data after the texture is uploaded
to the GPU, reducing memory usage. This is beneficial when handling a
large number of images and retaining the image data is unnecessary,
potentially saving substantial memory. However, this makes it impossible
to serialize the loaded images or render on non-GPU systems. Default is
`false`.

## Impact

This new configuration option gives users more control over their memory
usage, especially when dealing with a large number or large resolution
of images. It allows users to optimize their applications based on their
specific needs and constraints.

Use ResizeObserver instead of `resize` event (#4536)
Currently, if the size of the canvas element changes independently of
the size of the browser window (e.g. due to its parent element
shrinking), then no repaints are scheduled.

This PR replaces the `resize` event with a `ResizeObserver`, which
ensures that _any_ resize of the canvas element (including those caused
by browser window resizes) trigger a repaint. The repaint is done
synchronously as part of the resize event, to reduce any potential
flickering.

The result seems to pass the rendering tests on most platform+browser
combinations. We tested:
- Chrome, Firefox, Safari on macOS
- Chrome, Firefox on Linux (ubuntu and arch, both running wayland)
- Chrome, Firefox on Windows

Firefox still has some antialiasing issues on Linux platforms, but this
antialiasing also happens on `master`, so this PR is not a regression
there.

The code setting `canvas.style.width` and `canvas.style.height` at the
start of `AppRunner::logic` was also removed - the canvas _display_ size
is now fully controlled by CSS, e.g. by setting `canvas { width: 100%;
height: 100%; }`.

The approach used here is described in
https://webglfundamentals.org/webgl/lessons/webgl-resizing-the-canvas.html

Note: The only remaining place where egui updates the style of the
canvas it is rendering to is some of the IME/mobile input handling code.
Fixing that is out of scope for this PR, and will be done in a followup
PR.

TextEdit hint text styling (#4517)
Simply adds a `hint_text_font` (any suggestions for a better name?
hint_text_style seemed misleading as it doesn't only accept `TextStyle`)
method to the TextEdit builder that allows to set the styling
(specifically, a `FontSelection`) for the hint text.

My personal use-case for this was having body-sized hint text in a
heading-sized TextEdit, but I'm sure there's more out there.

The PR shouldn't break compatibility, as it's stored as an `Option` that
defaults to the `font_id` (which was the only behaviour prior to this)
when empty.

It looked too trivial to add something to the actual demo, but I have it
locally, so let me know if I should commit that.

Ran the check script locally, had no complaints.

Not sure what the "best practice" is, to me it seems like one should
import from "the original location" if possible, but now it should at
least be possible to not re-export ahash without any breakage in the
egui code base (but possibly in projects using egui, so one should
probably deprecate it if one would like to go that path). It also seems
like epaint re-exports ahash.
